This study plan follows the six chapters of Assessing with Respect by Starr Sackstein. Each chapter explores how assessment practices influence students’ social and emotional development and how educators can create learning environments where assessment promotes dignity, growth, and student ownership. Participants are encouraged to engage with the book as part of this experience. You may borrow a copy, access it in a way that works for you, or participate fully through the reflection prompts and application activities provided here. Engagement with the ideas—and thoughtful reflection on your own classroom context—is what matters most. This professional learning experience centers on the idea that assessment is not just an academic process—it is also a relational one. The way educators design and communicate assessments influences students’ confidence, motivation, emotional responses to feedback, and willingness to take intellectual risks. By approaching assessment with empathy and intentionality, teachers can build classrooms where students feel respected, supported, and empowered to take ownership of their learning. As you move through each chapter, record insights, identify questions or tensions, and reflect on how these ideas connect to your own instructional practices. Dialogue with colleagues is encouraged as a way to extend thinking and explore ways to build more humane and student-centered assessment practices. Please don't hesitate to reach out if I can support you in any way to help you get the most out of this book study experience. I'm excited to collaborate and make this journey both meaningful and enriching for you! When students feel known and respected, they are more willing to engage with feedback and take ownership of their learning. Reflection Questions ● Reflect on how relationships currently shape assessment practices in your classroom. In what ways do students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, or responding to feedback? ● Think about a time when a strong relationship helped a student respond positively to feedback or assessment results. What aspects of that relationship contributed to the outcome? ● How might students who feel disconnected from school experience assessment differently from students who feel supported? ● What evidence do you have that your assessment practices communicate care, respect, and belief in students’ abilities? Application Activities ● Relationship Mapping: Reflect on your relationships with students and identify strategies for strengthening connections with those who may feel less engaged. ● Student Conference: Hold a brief learning conference with a student to discuss their goals, progress, and challenges. ● Feedback Reflection: Review recent feedback you provided to students and consider whether it communicates encouragement, clarity, and respect. 2️⃣Developing Self-Awareness in the Context of Chapter 2: Developing Self-Awareness in the Context of Assessment Big Idea Students develop stronger learning habits when they understand their strengths, areas for growth, and learning processes. Reflection Questions 1. Reflect on how students currently monitor their own learning in your classroom. What opportunities do they have to reflect on their progress? 2. Consider how students respond to assessment results. Do they view assessments as judgments of ability or as opportunities for growth? 3. What strategies might help students develop a deeper understanding of their own learning processes? 4. How might reflective assessment practices help students become more independent learners? Application Activities ● Self-Assessment Activity: Ask students to evaluate their own work using a rubric or success criteria. ● Learning Reflection: Implement a short reflection prompt after an assignment asking students what they learned and what they would improve. ● Goal Setting: Guide students in setting learning goals based on feedback from a recent assessment. 3️⃣Facilitating Self-Management for Better Learning Chapter 3: Facilitating Self-Management for Better Learning Big Idea Students benefit from assessment practices that help them develop habits of organization, persistence, and responsibility for their learning. Reflection Questions ● Reflect on how students currently manage their learning in your classroom. What structures support them in staying organized and engaged? ● Consider how assessment deadlines, feedback, and revision opportunities influence student work habits. ● How might assessment practices encourage students to take greater responsibility for planning and completing their work? ● What strategies could help students develop stronger self-management skills? Application Activities ● Progress Tracker: Introduce a tool that helps students monitor their learning progress. ● Revision Opportunity: Allow students to revise work after receiving feedback. ● Learning Plan: Ask students to create a short plan outlining how they will improve their work. 4️⃣Teaching Responsible Decision-Making Chapter 4: Teaching Responsible Decision-Making to Promote Student Ownership Big Idea Assessment practices can help students develop decision-making skills that promote ownership of their learning. Reflection Questions ● Reflect on the degree of choice students currently have in demonstrating their learning. How might increased autonomy affect motivation? ● Consider how assessment structures influence student decision-making. Do students feel empowered to make meaningful learning choices? ● What opportunities exist for students to evaluate their own progress and determine next steps? ● How might giving students greater responsibility in assessment processes strengthen engagement and accountability? Application Activities ● Choice-Based Assessment: Offer students multiple ways to demonstrate their understanding. ● Student-Led Conferences: Invite students to present their learning progress. ● Decision Reflection: Ask students to explain why they chose a particular approach to completing an assignment. 5️⃣Understanding and Improving Emotional Responses Chapter 5: Understanding and Improving Emotional Responses to Grades Big Idea Grades can trigger strong emotional responses that influence motivation, confidence, and engagement. What emotional patterns do you observe? 2. Think about how grading practices might influence students’ confidence and willingness to take academic risks. 3. What strategies might help students focus more on learning and less on the emotional impact of grades? 4. How can teachers communicate feedback in ways that support resilience and growth? Application Activities ● Feedback Conversation: Have a short conversation with students about how to interpret feedback constructively. ● Grade Reflection: Ask students to reflect on what they learned from an assessment rather than focusing solely on the grade. ● Growth Mindset Prompt: Encourage students to identify next steps for improvement after receiving feedback. 6️⃣Reinforcing Student Dignity Through Personalized Chapter 6: Reinforcing Student Dignity Through Personalized Assessment Big Idea Personalized assessment practices honor students’ individual strengths, needs, and learning paths while maintaining high expectations. Reflection Questions ● Reflect on how assessment practices in your classroom recognize students as individuals with unique experiences and abilities. ● What opportunities exist for students to demonstrate learning in ways that reflect their strengths? ● How might personalized assessment practices promote equity and student dignity? ● What adjustments could help ensure that all students feel respected and valued during assessment processes?
